Questions

Which barcode type should I use?

For products sold in shops, use EAN-13 with a GS1-issued number; use UPC-A if a US or Canadian retailer requires it. For your own stock, shelves and internal IDs, Code 128 is the most flexible choice.

Do I get an official product number?

No. This tool draws barcodes for numbers you already have. Retailers require GTINs issued to your company by your national GS1 organisation.

Why does my barcode not scan after printing?

Print at 100% or "Actual size", not "Fit to page". Keep the white space on both sides of the bars (the quiet zone), and use dark bars on a light background.

Is anything I type uploaded?

No. Barcodes are made in your browser. Nothing you enter reaches our server.

What size should a barcode be?

At 100% (nominal) size, an EAN-13 barcode is about 37.3 × 25.9 mm including its white margins, and GS1 allows roughly 80% to 200% of that for retail. Code 128 and other internal formats grow with the number of characters; the default 0.33 mm bar width suits most printers and scanners.

Is the check digit calculated for me?

Yes. For EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, UPC-E and ITF-14, enter the number without its last digit and we add the check digit. If you enter the full number, we check that its last digit is correct.

How do I make a GS1 DataMatrix with lot and expiry?

Choose GS1 DataMatrix, then enter the GTIN, expiry date, batch or lot and, if needed, a serial number. We build the GS1 data, for example (01)09501101530003(17)271231(10)AB123, and check every part against the GS1 rules. Use Send to Label Maker to print it with lot and expiry text.

GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix?

Both carry the same GS1 data. GS1-128 is a linear barcode used on cartons and pallets, and it holds up to 48 characters. GS1 DataMatrix is a small square code used on medicine and healthcare packs, and it needs a 2D (camera-based) scanner.

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

Yes. The barcodes are free for any use, including on products you sell, with no watermark and no attribution required. You own the codes you create.
